On October 23rd, 34 3rd-5th grade educators from the South Sound and beyond gathered in Tumwater at the ESD 113 facility to attend the first in a series of “Locally Relevant Climate Science” workshops put on by that agency and the Pacific Education Institute. Participants learned a range of activities, from tree circumference measuring, a high school lesson that can be adapted to 5th grade standards, to Sit Spots, which help younger students focus on their outside environment. The purpose of this workshop, one teacher observed, was to “Make climate change personally and locally relevant to the kids.”

Many of this workshops attendees will go on to implement this cutting-edge curriculum in their classrooms in the new year, bringing environmental awareness to students across the state.
