On March 4th, Hattie Osborne of Pacific Education Institute met with 23 third through fifth grade educators from across the ESD 113 region to continue learning about forests, climate change and climate science resources. To begin the day, teachers discussed phenomena and what it means to use locally relevant phenomena to drive instruction and engage students in their environment.
Later that morning, the educators went on a field experience to Port Blakely’s school tour site in Olympia. Once they arrived at the site, Port Blakely educators Kelley Stanley and Colby Cooper greeted the teachers and oriented them to the history of the company and the Olympia site. The teachers experienced the tour using the lens of climate science; educators learned about sustainable forestry, how Port Blakely is adapting planting practices to a changing climate and about carbon storage in wood products.
After returning to ESD 113, teachers debriefed the field experience and explored climate science resources aligned to their grade level.
