The “What If We Get It Right?” Book Club offers a space for community members to explore climate change through the lens of joy and collective action. Aimed at young adults and adults, we will share collective wisdom and ideas to transform problems into possibilities for a brighter future. Interspersed with heartfelt stories, artistic pieces, and interviews with experts in the field of climate change, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson’s book brings an action-oriented and joyful perspective to the very challenging work of climate justice and climate change.
Bringing together educators, parents, and students, this book group aims to build a community of diverse perspectives with opportunities for personal learning and inspiring impactful action. Utilizing the What If We Get It Right? Reading & Action Guide, we will read, discuss, and engage in activities centered around personal action steps and visions for the future. Teachers will gain resources for supporting their students in developing climate action plans and will be equipped with resources and activities to both drive the conversation in their classrooms and hold space for the climate emotions that come with them.
For each of the three sessions of the book group, we will focus on exploring 2-3 of the eight sections of What If We Get It Right. Although we will encourage participants to read the full sections in preparation for each session, we will also offer “spotlight” chapters to focus on to make this opportunity accessible for educators who are interested but have less time available.
In each session, we will facilitate discussion about the ideas in the chapters using prompts from the book’s Reading & Action guide. We will also develop additional activities that leverage transdisciplinary strategies such as arts-based learning, storytelling, and social-emotional connections that can be brought back into the classroom.
