Research to Practice: Data Science Through Climate Data

The North Central Educational Service District (NCESD) recently finished up their Data Science Workshop Series designed to help educators integrate data science standards into their classrooms. The series brought together teachers from across the region to explore real-world climate science data through a data science lens.

Over the four part series teachers explored secondary examples of data and engaged in learning around the following:

  • Curiosity and Asking Questions about Data
  • Pattern Seeking in Data
  • Making Meaning of Data
  • Communicating about Data

The NCESD facilitators shared strategies for fostering a data science mindset, emphasizing critical thinking, ethical data use, and collaboration. Throughout the four part series, educators considered areas where strategies could be weaved into the district science, math, and technology learning experiences.

One highlight of the series was the collaboration and conversations around CODAP (Common Online Data Analysis Platform). This web-based tool is designed to help educators and students explore, analyze, and visualize data. CODAP provided an interactive environment where data sets can be manipulated to create graphs and discover patterns connecting to foundational data literacy.
